MEXICAN ARTISAN

HUICHOL ART

These beautiful pieces of art are made by the great Artist Roturanakame, a Huichol from the mountains of Jalisco.  As all Huichol Artesanos, Roturanakame makes use of the peyote and makes his handcrafted pieces that represent his artistic spiritual connection. To the Huichol people, the deer is a divine being which connects the earth with the divine, the eagle represents our Great Mother, the jaguar is a messenger from the Divine and a symbol of strength.  All images represent the invisible world of deities, power and knowledge. The Huichol art is portrayed in the form of gourds, masks, jewelry and sculpture.

Huicholes use organic material to make their art but most common is the use of Chaquira, small colorful seed beads to form intricate bright designs on bowls, masks, gorgeous bracelets and earrings, and even statues.  They also use yarn coated with wax or resin pressed onto shapes to make the “Yarn Painting”. Each piece is specially crafted in a way that its colors and design end up awakening people’s senses and creativity as many people use these special creations for protection and good energy.  It could take weeks or months to complete a piece, depending on its design and size.
