A SUMMER RETREAT of WELLNESS & CULTURE!
Awakening our Inner SOL
Despertando Nuestro Sol Interno

Mon. July 1 - Mon July 8, 2024!

With LILIA ROMAN, and Mexican Healers, teachers, historians, guides, and others.

IN BEAUTIFUL MALINALCO
Pueblo Magico, MEXICO

Summer is the brightest of our four seasons. During this time our pueblo magico, Malinalco, becomes beautiful! We may have some sporadic rain at night but the days are warm (late 70s) and bright and our mountains become green and lush.

Summer is the perfect time to cultivate a sense of expansion and lightness as we become centered and connected to the present moment. This retreat is about that: finding grace, profound joy, and a sense of complete expansion as we surrender to the strength of Madre Tierra.

We will eat nourishing food, practice daily conscious breathing and movement, rituals  (Cacao and Temazcal). Be part of our transformative Cacao workshop where we eat (and cleanse our bodies with) cacao prepared with our own hands. Experience the healing power of our TEMAZCAL, our ancestral sweat lodge and the warm womb of Mother Earth. Learn from archeologists, historians and healers, receive womb massages and sobadas (deep body work) from Mexican Curanderas. We will go on exiting tours such as:

  • Malinalco archeological sites, the last temple and ceremonial center where the Aztecs trained their Eagle and Tiger warriors.
  • The Franciscan Convent founded in 1540.
  • Xochicalco, an Epiclasic Teotihuacan city and a place of great importance where leaders of all mesoamerican cultures gathered.
  • CHALMA, a sacred town where pilgrimages from all over Mexico come to honor el Señor de Chalma and its black Christ.
  • LAS ESTACAS! A pristine river known as one of Mexico’s National Treasures where we can snorkel, swim, and scuba dive, or just walk around the beautiful green areas of the park.

Daily worries, trauma and stressors can make us feel ‘stuck’ and small. Without noticing, we can begin to shrink, physically and energetically. Daily imbalances can only lead us to dis-ease. Our great healers, Curander@s, and teachers will help us cultivate lightness and a sense of expansion and complete freedom. This is how we will nourish our inner sun.

This is la medicina del Verano, Summer’s medicine. Summer time comes when the earth’s axis is pointing straight towards the sun. The Mayans and the Aztecs, and other mesoamerican cultures, held the Sun God as their most important deity for the sun was a symbol of life-giving, clarity, wisdom and knowledge, a powerful force that made the world go round.

In this retreat we will learn about deities such as Huitzilopchtli, the Nahuatl Gods of the sun. We will learn about the sacredness of Colibris, hummingbirds, and their association with Huitzilopochtli who, in the Mexica mythology, was guided to the sun by a hummingbird. What is the symbolism of this mythology? How can ancestral wisdom help us heal our disconnection, depression, and other modern illnesses of body and soul?

Hummingbirds are part of the every-day life in Malinalco. More than ten species of hummingbirds live here. Come a learn why they are sacred and respected.

So much is being talked about wellness, but how do we cultivate it in our daily lives?

What we will learn in our Cacao Workshop:

Make your own body scrub. Chocolate scrub benefits are many. It removes dead skin cells, it moisturizes de skin, it boosts circulation and stimulates cell renewal helping balance our energies within and without.

LEARN how to make your own delicious chocolate!

Explore the Way in which the Mexica people viewed TRAUMA and the ways to heal it. Trauma is part of our lives. Unless we become aware of it, it can affects us in so many ways and it can greatly impact our lives. Through ritual, limpias, breath & movement practices, we will cleanse our bodies as we become more aware of our our emotions and harmful patterns.

If you are a student of Curanderismo, you will have the opportunity to learn the art of ‘sobadas’, ‘cerradas’ & ‘womb massage’. If you have attended this workshop, you will go deeper into this ancestral medicine.

WE ENJOY TRADICION & CULTURA. Whether is Dia de los Muertos, pilgrimages, festivals of arts and crafts, ancestral food and others, Malinalco offers beauty and history and the simplicity of an organic town untouched by the stressors of globalization.

Our retreats are an opportunity to heal, to be inspired as you reconnect to your true essence. You  meet beautiful like-minded souls, work with our Mexican healers, our CURANDER@S.

DOWN TIME with ourselves and Mother Earth is crucial to our sense of well-being. In our retreats, we take time to rest and digest. We enjoy the beauty of silence, cultivate gratitude, and wake up our precious inner sun.

Our evening circles will include deep restoration and meditation.

Each day we will enjoy nourishing vegetarian or vegan meals made with love by our great Mexican cooks.

OUR INTENTION: To learn the art of tending to our heart and soul so we know what is like to live our lives with grace and joy. Expect to release much and receive even more. In these practices we learn to live in a sustainable way.  We detox mentally and physically; we nourish body and heart as we cultivate unconditional self-love.

This will be a magical seven- day wellness and cultural experience you can’t miss!

More about the places we will visit:

XOCHICALCO, a pre-Columbian archeological site about one hour from Malinalco.  The name Xochicalco may be translated as “in the house of Flowers”.  The architecture and iconography of Xochicalco show affinities with Teotihuacan, the Mayan area, and the Matlazinca culture of the Toluca Valley.  Today the residents of the nearby village of Cuentepec still speak Nahuatl.

MALINALCO ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE –  An easy climb for most people. Bring your walking shoes. We learn the history of the Aztec Eagle and Jaguar warrior as you delight with the beautiful view of the entire valley.

We close our program with a special meal and a CEREMONIA DE CACAO. Through the Cacao ceremony, we learn connection and harmony as we awaken our senses.  We will dance, sing and pray.  A beautiful ceremony led by a woman healer.

More about MALINALCO

Considered one of the Pueblos Mágicos, Malinalco is located in the State of Mexico.  It nestles among breathtaking mountains un every dirección, resting in a valley of shrubs, medicinal plants and vines.  It is only about two hours away from Mexico City.  In Aztec mythology, the Goddess Malinalxochitl once chose this place as her home and it now offers a genuine travel-through the ages experience.

Brief MALINALCO HISTORY:

The Aztecs conquered the area in the 1470s and established a sanctuary for their military elite, the Eagle and Jaguar warriors.  The complex was built on the Cerro the los Ídolos (Hill of the Idols), over and older ceremonial site.  The main attraction of this archeological site is the Cuauhcalli, or House of Eagles, which is a building carved out of the side of the mountain.

The name Malinalco comes from the Nahuatl word Malinalli, which in Spanish can be translated as ‘Zacate del carbonero’.  The word Xochitl means Flower, and co- means place: “where they workship the goddess Malinalxóchitl, the Malinalco flower”.

The hills and cliffs that surround Malinalco hide beautiful secrets such as numerous cave paintings and petroglyphs. Organized tour guides can take people to visit these sites.  Malinalco is also famous for making its own mezcal for which there are also tours to learn about the making process of this maguey elixir.

In one of the beautiful hills, the Aztecs also built the temple of Cuauhtinchan, which oversees the entire valley of Malinalco, and beyond. This site is one of the most impressive monolithic (one piece) structures in Mesoamerica. The main structure, the House of Eagles, which sits atop of the hill, and which can only be reached after walking more than 400 steps, was once a sanctuary for the military elite of the Aztecs and was the site of numerous important rituals, including the initiation for eagle and Jaguar warriors.
